Roshi feat. Pars Radio
Born in Wales to Iranian parents Roshi Nasehi is a singer-songwriter who presents her own songs alongside personal interpretations of some of the Iranian songs she was brought up listening to. She is a regular and welcome live performer at some of London's most left-field clubs, alone or with her band ‘Pars Radio’ which features the electronic soundscapes of Graham Dowdall (Nico, Gagarin, Pere Ubu). Their debut EP And Stars (2008) and debut album The Sky And The Caspian Sea (2009) both received widespread acclaim across Europe and beyond from, amongst others, The Wire, Rock n Reel magazine, Tokalfi (Germany), Rockerilla (Italy), Camden New Journal and New Internationalist Magazine who described the album as 'a début that exudes confidence, poise and promises the start of a great future'. Both records also received significant airplay on BBC Radio 3's Late Junction, The Verb, World on 3, BBC 6 music, Resonance, RTE (Ireland) Norddeutscher Roadfunk (Germany) and many more. Their most recent EP Mehregan was experimental record of the month in the Feb 2011 edition of Mixmag who described Roshi as "One of the most singular voices working at the moment. In March 2012 she will present a live score to Mary Pickford's silent classic Amarilly Of Clothes Line Alley at London's Southbank Centre. This piece has been commissioned by Birds Eye View.

Nancy Wallace
Nancy Wallace, erstwhile voice of The Memory Band and more recently part of The Owl Service, released her fist solo venture - the wonderful Young Hearts EP - in 2005. A sublime collection of disco classics set to simple folk arrangements that won the hearts of everybody lucky enough to hear it. In 2009 Nancy finally unleashed her debut solo album. Old Stories. After gracing the cover of fRoots magazine in May 2009, she has become a firm favourite of BBC radio's Late Junction and Mike Harding shows. Last year was topped off with a nomination in the Horizon category of the BBC Folk Awards.
"Long respected as one of the purest voices on the folk circuit, this recording, like her live work, fashions an amazing intimacy with her listener. A substantial debut. (****)" Mojo

You Are Wolf
You Are Wolf explores English and American folk and original leftfield pop with haunting vocals, a loop station and spoken word. She was picked as an EDFSS/The Magpie’s Nest Folk Rising artist in 2010, and has played at Union Chapel, Cambridge Folk Festival, The Vortex and the Queen Elizabeth Hall. She has appeared twice on Radio 3’s The Verb, including a specially-commissioned new song for the show. You Are Wolf has been given an award from the PRS Foundation for Music’s Women Make Music scheme, and is currently working on her new set of songs based around British birds in folklore. Her debut EP, ‘hunting little songs’ (Mulberry House) is out now!
‘a beat poet lost in the renaissance period with no possessions and a distant memory of hearing Bjork’s ‘Medulla’… The depth of the imagery You Are Wolf conjures up is magical and macabre, it is a joy to get absorbed in the eerie storytelling… ‘Hunting Little Songs’ is totally compelling, an absolute gem for listeners feeling jaded and world weary, it will feel like an invigorating breath of fresh air’ THE EAR HORN
‘unfeasibly wonderful’ BBC Radio 3
‘I’m so excited about this EP… I haven’t heard anything like this in a long, long time’ BBC 6Music
‘Inventive, creepy, gorgeous’ The Other Woman, Resonance FM
www.youarewolf.com

Jess Bryant
Dark and devious, Jess Bryant‘s folk is perfectly suited to these dank winter nights, when strangers ghost by head-down and you can’t help but gaze into every yellow window. Newly signed to Red Deer Club, the London singer has a voice rich as red wine: one which captivates above cymbal clatters and dripping keys the same way a lighthouse beam illuminates a bay, the same way you feel when your lover enters the room.
http://soundcloud.com/jess-bryant

Rosie Okae
Rosie Okae will be collaborating with talented and versatile musician Raphael Mann to re-imagine her captivating experimental pop songs especially for this event. The openness and, at times, appealing fragility of her lyrics are strikingly complimented by the richness of her vocalisation. Expect an inventive mix of styles with a few surprises along the way...

Special guests: Crewdson / Will Connor

Doors 7.30pm, music starts at 8.00pm

Tickets £6 in advance here: http://www.wegottickets.com/event/155873
or £8 on the door

RAF AND O
Raf and O are Raf Mantelli and Richard Smith. The two piece band from South London brew their own colour of electronica around the intimate and magnetic voice of Florentine songstress Raf Mantelli, fusing song, live electronics and acoustic / electric instruments.
They have released 3 records on Geo including their full length debut album in 2010, which all garnered glowing reviews and radio plays in UK/ Europe, have extensively collaborated with Gagarin, are writing tracks with Robert Logan on a separate project and have supported amongst others Alabama 3, Rothko, Nedry and legendary Faust.

Raf and O have now completed their second album and to celebrate this they will be performing it as a sneak preview at the first Ship Of Fools of 2012.

Indietronic delicacy. Seductive, winding pieces of jazzy vocal electronica Mixmag **** - A South London based secret that need sharing with the wider world Flux Magazine The intimacy of the album is just beautiful and makes those Aphex Twins sounds really accessible and a lot more emotively intense than I have heard before Subba Cultcha 8/10
http://rafando.com/

CREWDSON
Live as in the studio, Crewdson creates sound from machinery, found items, manipulated vocals and saxophone which he samples and manipulates through his idiosyncratic electronic set up, controlling his sounds with an amiga joystick, homemade controllers and midi motorcycle handlebars.

As well as releasing his debut album 'Gravity' last year on Slowfoot Records he has been remixing for the likes of Ninja Tune and has been touring Europe and Japan as a member of Matthew Herbert's live band.

His music could be described as an upbeat and playful concoction of electronic music, taking in influences from techno, jazz, 2-step, dubstep, your doorstep poses the question of what might happen if you threw Polar Bear, Flying Lotus, Aphex Twin and maybe even The Streets in a room together.
"A fantastic debut from the London-based producer, full of intriguing promise." [BBC]

"Eleven fantastic post-dubstep/micro-house tracks from Matthew Herbert's tech assistant and fine south-east London producer Crewdson" [Time Out]

" 'Gravity' is a wonderful achievement. A sensual marriage of skippy 2-step rhythms, throbbing bass and delicate arrangements. Crewdson is moving bass music beyond its post-dubstep moniker."[Clash]

"Yeah, that's nicely different from Crewdson, 'Electric Wing' on an album to watch out for called 'Gravity'." [Gilles Peterson, Radio 1]

"Simply put, this is brilliant and highly recommended" [Future Sequence]
http://crewdson.net/

WILL CONNOR
Will Connor, is a London-based percussionist devoted to experimenting and composing using unconventional instruments and techniques. Innovatively rethinking how to generate percussive and acoustic sounds with a goal of reversing the aural expectations of the instruments, attempting to create electronic sounds with acoustic devices, et cetera, Connor plays drones and sustained tones along with truncated, abrupt tinklings.

He freely draws upon Italian Futurism and Dadaist sensibilities to create textural soundscapes and industrial sonic explorations, performing on household objects and homemade devices, including pot lids, grill hoods, sheet metal, springs, shelf brackets, and bicycles, as well as traditional and ethnic percussion.

Connor primarily performs dark ambient composed and improvised material, but also works in gothic, jazz, and modern classical contexts.
Connor's background in improvised music, modern composition, and ethnic ensembles prepared him for playing with Vultures Quartet, one of Londons most active improvising and modern composition performance groups.

Special support guest will be Bird Radio.

London based musician Mikey Kirkpatrick is an act with a broad spectrum of inspirations: “Bird” because of the flutes. “Radio” because of the technology he uses.

Opening guest: These Feathers Have Plumes
Andie Brown is a musician from London who began playing music as a bass guitarist, working with experimental band Cindytalk in her late teens. An interest in sound and experimentation led Andie to begin working as These Feathers Have Plumes in 2007, creating sonic landscapes using traditional and non-traditional instrumentation (primarily double bass and glass), found-sound and field recordings, manipulated and composed using digital media. Andie has a particular interest in bringing space and place into her work, often using field-recording as a basis to bring a feeling and essence of physical space into the compositions she creates. Andie has released work in New York and London and has had work included in a group sound-art show at London’s Institute of Contemporary Arts.

MADAM
Presented in collaboration with Kaparte Promotions: http://www.kaparte.info/
Playing a special electro-acoustic set

Fronted by the charismatic chanteuse Sukie Smith, Madam's noirish, nocturnal music brings to mind PJ Harvey, Portishead, and Cat Power at their smokey, intoxicating, late night best. Earlier this year the band released their second album, Gone Before Morning, which like their first, In Case of Emergency (2008), has received widespread critical acclaim. Whilst Sukie also wrote the soundtrack for Neophyte Films’ debut feature film, Hush Your Mouth - an ‘urban ghost story’, which won Best Film and Best Director at the Portugal Film Festival 2011

Praise for Madam and Gone Before Morning

**** - Q Magazine
Sultry, slightly spooked, and lusciously late night Americana noir
- Time Out
lots of dark, sinister undertones, and her voice is sultry and dangerous with a hint of vulnerability and skewed glamour… one to look out for
– Mail on Sunday
Throughout her music Madam affects the listener in many ways; her evocative vocals leave you wanting more
– Aesthetica
Ten tracks to treasure create highly atmospheric vignettes of pleasure taken in a moment, love that lasts a weekend, lies told in the name of love, and lovers that cannot risk staying in the same place too long

BONFIRE MADIGAN SHIVE
American composer, performing artist, community organizer and international touring musician based in San Francisco, Madigan is a cellist, singer and guitarist, formerly of the band Tattle Tale and currently fronting her own ensemble.
Starting on cello at the age of nine, Bonfire Madigan Shive began her composing career at fifteen in the Pacific Northwest Riot Grrrl scene releasing music with seminal independent record labels K and Kill Rock Stars. Shive has gone on to establish herself as a singular and trailblazing performer, blending folk, art, punk, classical and avant-baroque styles.

Madigan will perform two exclusive dates in the UK, on Friday 4 November at Late at Tate Britain (as part of Apocalyptic Cabaret) and a different set on the Ship of Fools on 6 November.

Bonfire Madigan play baroque-folk punk grounded on frontwoman Madigan Shive's soaring lullaby vocals and virtuoso cello skills. Shive, a master of tone and mood, crafts songs with raw, emotional melodies and powerful, unexpected dynamics. — New York Press

The howls of a wounded cello and the voice of a tormented angel suffuse the blood-soaked tragedy on the American Conservatory Theater's stage. Above all - literally, seated high amid the massive organ pipes of Walt Spangler's industrial-baroque cathedral set - composer, cellist and vocalist Bonfire Madigan Shive is an electrifying one-woman heavenly choir. — San Francisco Chronicle

NICK HUDSON
Brighton-based composer/musician whose self-produced records have earned high acclaim from such cult luminaries as Julian Cope, David Tibet, Xiu Xiu and Franko B.

KAPARTE OXJAM 2011: SLaPpER / Lupen Crook / Gagarin / The Reckless Engineer + Special guest SIMON BREED

Kaparte Promotions presents:

Kaparte OxJam 2011 @ The Miller, Saturday 22 October 2011

After the success of last year event Kaparte Promotions presents another Oxjam night of experimental music, performances, visual art and djs in the exciting area of London Borough.

Music:
SLaPpER / Lupen Crook / Gagarin / The Reckless Engineer + Special guest SIMON BREED

SLAPPER
Serge Gainsbourg meets Captain Beefheart via Lieutenant Pigeon, SlapPeR was created in 2004, to perform a one-off rendition of 'Any Old Iron' for a Cockney-themed night of Fabaret – a cabaret night for random acts of meaningless and senseless beauty. Two years and a few more musicians later they decided to fully unleash their unashamed display of disturbing cacophony and special costumerie upon the general public. A string of London gigs has followed, as well as performances at festivals such as The Secret Garden Party.
http://www.myspace.com/slappertime

LUPEN CROOK
Singer-songwriter and visual artist Lupen Crook blends beauty and brutal truth in his own inimitable style. Edgy and emotive, with a dark, observational wit, his imaginative song-writing continues to gather interest and acclaim from both underground and mainstream quarters. Lupen Crook also produces a wide variety of raw and expressionistic artworks, including paintings, collage and illustrations. He releases all musical output via his own label Beast Reality, more often than not featuring packaging that has been hand-crafted and personalised by Lupen Crook himself.

“… like a more jaundiced Ray Davies as the song travels from voice and guitar through muscular band punctuation… this is original and highly concentrated stuff.“ – Mojo
“… a dazzling virtuoso … skeletal, finger-picked songs… his voice stretches words beautifully around every nook and cranny. … Who knows what really lurks behind Lupen Crook’s pretty demeanour? Whatever it is, though, it sounds utterly compelling.” - NME
http://www.lupencrook.com/

GAGARIN
Gagarin has been making music on the edges of the musical galaxy for many years in many guises. Currently he works alone crafting atmospheric digital soundscapes, sculpting future grooves and polishing aching melodies. He plays out live - an exciting mix of software precision and human frailty/spontaneity thats never the same twice.

Early adventures in cult Manchester band Ludus were followed by a sustained period playing and co-writing with the legendary Nico of the Velvet Underground. He's since recorded and collaborated with John Cale, Suns of Arqa, Eric Random, David Thomas & Pere Ubu, Bill Pritchard,Cabaret Voltaire as well as many others and played at the Tabyck shamanist festival in Siberia,in castles in Scotland and France, festivals and clubs across the globe.

THE RECKLESS ENGINEER
The Reckless Engineer creates shifting sonic textures by manipulating pre-recorded audio, with results ranging from the ephemerol, to the sometimes brutal. He works as sound engineer for Marvin Ayres whose recent perfomance include the National Portrait Gallery. The Reckless Engineer last London appearance was during the event Edge of the Outside at Sassoon Gallery.
