Playing a special electro-acoustic set

Fronted by the charismatic chanteuse Sukie Smith, Madam's noirish, nocturnal music brings to mind PJ Harvey, Portishead, and Cat Power at their smokey, intoxicating, late night best. Earlier this year the band released their second album, Gone Before Morning, which like their first, In Case of Emergency (2008), has received widespread critical acclaim. BONFIRE MADIGAN SHIVE
American composer, performing artist, community organizer and international touring musician based in San Francisco, Madigan is a cellist, singer and guitarist, formerly of the band Tattle Tale and currently fronting her own ensemble.
Starting on cello at the age of nine, Bonfire Madigan Shive began her composing career at fifteen in the Pacific Northwest Riot Grrrl scene releasing music with seminal independent record labels K and Kill Rock Stars. Shive has gone on to establish herself as a singular and trailblazing performer, blending folk, art, punk, classical and avant-baroque styles.

Madigan will perform two exclusive dates in the UK, on Friday 4 November at Late at Tate Britain (as part of Apocalyptic Cabaret) and a different set on the Ship of Fools on 6 November.

Serge Gainsbourg meets Captain Beefheart via Lieutenant Pigeon, SlapPeR was created in 2004, to perform a one-off rendition of 'Any Old Iron' for a Cockney-themed night of Fabaret – a cabaret night for random acts of meaningless and senseless beauty. Two years and a few more musicians later they decided to fully unleash their unashamed display of disturbing cacophony and special costumerie upon the general public. A string of London gigs has followed, as well as performances at festivals such as The Secret Garden Party.

GAGARIN
Gagarin has been making music on the edges of the musical galaxy for many years in many guises. Currently he works alone crafting atmospheric digital soundscapes, sculpting future grooves and polishing aching melodies. Early adventures in cult Manchester band Ludus were followed by a sustained period playing and co-writing with the legendary Nico of the Velvet Underground. With the project “Soundscapes” (born within an Arbeit curated live series with same name), Jochen Arbeit (of Einstürzende Neubauten and Die Haut), Paul Beauchamp, Fabrizio Modonese Palumbo and Julia Kent (the trio known as Blind Cave Salamander) pursue the task and challenge of exchanging the results of their own ...sound researches in a public space.

What is important is the moment of the spontaneous meeting of different systems of soundscaping, independent from each other. The results will gonna be unpredictable, unique and temporary.

JOCHEN ARBEIT
Better knows as the guitarist of EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN Arbeit moved 1980 to Berlin and became part of the loose artist and music movement GENIALE DILETTANTEN.

Which had its roots in Punk-Rock and Dada. In 1983 he became a member of the influencal Instrumental-Band DIE HAUT, with whom he started touring in Europe and overseas. The band produced records in the USA with fellow likeminded Artisits as Singers. The band always wore suits on stage.

In 1997 he became an official member of the Avantgarde Noise Band EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN, which he met in the earliey eighties.

Other projects were a Berlin style country band THE JEVER MOUNTAIN BOYS, the soul crooner of the band MARTIN DEAN, the melancholic seriousness of painter Martin Eder with his band RICHARD RUIN and the tiki and latino influenced project LATIN LOVERS with Yoyo Röhm.

Since 2006 he is part of the Art Project STUPID GREEN with dancer/performance artist Vania Rovisco and light artist Asa Frankenberg.

JULIA KENT
Julia Kent was born in Vancouver, Canada, studied cello at Indiana University, Bloomington, and lives in New York. She was an original member of cello-rock band RASPUTINA, who released two records on Columbia and toured throughout North America.

After leaving Rasputina she joined ANTONY AND THE JOHNSONS, playing on and contributing string arrangements to the group's Mercury Prize-winning record I AM A BIRD NOW, and touring Europe, North America, Australia, and Brazil, including shows at Carnegie Hall and the Royal Albert Hall and numerous television appearances.

In addition to her ongoing participation in Antony and the Johnsons, she has performed and/or recorded with many other artists and ensembles, including the Angels of Light, Ben Weaver, Burnt Sugar, Leona Naess, Teddy Thompson, Devendra Banhart, Donovan, Larsen, William Parker, and Angela McCluskey.. As a solo artist, she has performed at the Donau Festival in Austria, the LEM festival in Barcelona, and at venues throughout Europe and the U.S.

THE BOOK OF THE WEST
Pim Jones and Sarra Francis met at Goldsmiths College, London in 2008 as undergraduates on the Popular Music degree course. After several academically successful collaborations, the duo decided to continue working on projects after university. Jason Dickinson was later invited to join, whereupon The Book of the West was formed. The Sassoon Gallery event, The Edge of Outside marks the debut public performance of their, ‘improvised, electronic and unexpected’ music.

Master of dark folk cabaret and art film director THOMAS NÖLA directly from Boston (US) for an exclusive set on the boat.
He will be accompanied for the occasion by an orchestre comprised of Lloyd James and Demian of Naevus and O Paradis fame, respectively.

During the night the European premiere of BLOOD JUNGLE a film by THOMAS NÖLA will be projected onto three different screens across the boat's belly.

Vultures started as a discussion that led to a noise making venture which has taken on it's own life and is carrying us with it. The musicians involved come from industrial, jazz, improv, rock, classical, and various goth style backgrounds. Vultures has been honoured to have a track included on Mrs. Vee Record's latest noise compilation entitled Manifesto. The track is a remix of one or our recordings made at the Tower of Music by Scott Robinson and it features the Tiple playing of Jade Dante, Columbian composer and electronic and traditional music artist.

For his first solo exhibition at Unit 24 Kevin Wayne presents Left to Own Devices, a show comprising of hand-made sculptures and box constructions produced over the last three and a half years.Waynes work is rooted in what could be termed as a more is more attitude, in that the viewer is invited to investigate and explore a variety of visually dense and detailed objects that sit at a crossroads of alternative illustration and the model-making craft enthusiast.

MADAM
The group project of singer-songwriter-producer Sukie Smith - will be presenting tracks from their new acclaimed album Gone Before Morning available via Sukie's own label Shilling Boy, distributed by CARGO, as well as old classics from In Case of Emergency.

The new album comprises eight original songs, combining elements of trip-hop and Western gothic with Sukie's own expressive widescreen vision. It also includes deconstructed takes on Odyssey's 'If You're Looking For A Way Out' and Al Wilson's Northern Soul classic, 'The Snake'.

Gone Before Morning has been listed on the Guardian Weekly Music section by Caroline O'Sullivan and received four stars in Q Magazine.

Later that year Sukie provided the score to the British independent film, Hush Your Mouth, featuring her song 'Ride The Waves' as the prominent 'outro'. The film recently won Best Film and Best Director at the Portugal Film Festival. In April 2010 she collaborated with Italian band Hollowblue on the co-write 'Wild Dogs Run', appearing with them in the Europe's first ever 3D music video, which won the award for Best Music Video at Hollywood's 3D Film Awards 2010.

LILIES ON MARS
Lilies on Mars are a three-piece experimental shoegaze band based in London, comprised of Lisa Masia, Marina Cristofalo and Matthew Parker. Lisa and Marina met over ten years ago and were the touring and film collaborators of Italian icon Franco Battiato before forming Lilies on Mars in August 2008". Fascinated by the spirit of DIY, they produced, mixed and self-released their debut album in April 2009. Shortly after, they debuted live at La Cigale Theatre in Paris with Franco Battiato and continued touring on their own in UK, Italy, Germany and USA for the whole 2009/beginning 2010. Following collaborations with various musicians, Lisa and Marina welcomed Matthew Parker (ex-Sunny Day Sets Dire) to join them on the drums.

ROGER O'DONNELL
Roger O'Donnell is an English keyboardist best known for his work with The Cure. O'Donnell has also performed in the Psychedelic Furs, the Thompson Twins and Berlin, as well as an active solo career.

Roger is going to perform an exclusive set of his dark(ish) ambient and highly suggestive composition for piano and synthetizers.

He will back for the Ship of Fools fresh from the success of THE CURE double appearance at Vivid Festival in Sydney, Australia (31 May-1 June).
The Cure are going to perform a Trilogy (the sequel) consisting in playing the albums TIB, 17 Seconds and Faith consecutively with Lol also playing keys and percussion on Faith!

JO QUAIL
As electric cellist and composer Jo has written and recorded instrumental music for several years under the name SonVer, and more recently under her own name 'Jo Quail'.
Joanna Quail has performed in a wide range of venues from the Royal Albert Hall, St James' Piccadilly and the Blackheath Concert Halls and has recorded numerous live sessions for the BBC and independent radio and TV channels.

CIRCUS JOY
Italian underground icons and noise pioneers active since 1984. On their second appearance in the UK Circus Joy' semi-acoustic set will include members of seminal apocalyptic folk outfit Ain Soph ClauDedi, Sentinel's Steve Stroll and Spectre, led by art rocker, painter and original frontman Corrado Mancini.
Their sound has recently evolved in a unique blend of post-rock revolution, revised 60s psychedelic guitars with a hint of extreme avant-garde. Circus Joy will present old material as well as new one from their recent album 'Laetitia'.

SPECTRE
Marcello Fraioli aka Spectre is an Italian multi-instrumentalist, singer and painter, who also engages quite successully with video and other multimedia tools. Spectre has been active on the European scene from the early 80s, producing an impressive body of work as solo act or with cult bands such as Ain Soph, Circus Joy and Space Alliance as well as many collaborations with other visual artists and musicians.
He favours guitars both acoustic and electric but seems to deal very well also with flute, synth, organ and bass.

Cellist/Singer Laura Moody from London explores what is possible using only solo cello and voice to create unique, experimental, acoustic, pop music. Laura is also known for her work with innovative string quartet the Elysian Quartet which has won much acclaim for its pioneering performances and recordings of contemporary classical, experimental and improvised music. In her solo cello and voice work she looks to combine the two instruments in interesting and often physical, even theatrical ways. Her songs are influenced by beatboxing, electronica, contemporary and classical music.

MADAM
The group project of singer-songwriter-producer Sukie Smith – are to make their acclaimed sophomore album Gone Before Morning available as a full release via Sukie’s own label Shilling Boy, distributed by CARGO.
The album comprises eight original songs, combining elements of trip-hop and Western gothic with Sukie’s own expressive widescreen vision. It also includes deconstructed takes on Odyssey’s ‘If You’re Looking For A Way Out’ and Al Wilson’s Northern Soul classic, ‘The Snake’.
MADAM’s debut album In Case Of Emergency was released on the Reveal label in February 2008, to universal acclaim. Later that year Sukie provided the score to the British independent film, Hush Your Mouth, featuring her song ‘Ride The Waves’ as the prominent ‘outro’. The film recently won Best Film and Best Director at the Portugal Film Festival. In April 2010 she collaborated with Italian band Hollowblue on the co-write ‘Wild Dogs Run’, appearing with them in the Europe’s first ever 3D music video, which won the award for Best Music Video at Hollywood’s 3D Film Awards 2010.

Spending most of her formative years in the golden baroque city of Prague Eva Eden came to London for the fusion of cultures, the clashing of sounds, creating a unique and distinctive blend of folk and electronica. She has collaborated with a vaste range of musicians and her song 'Underworld' has been covered by Patrick Wolf. Eva is going to perform old and new material with an exceptional line up featuring Kathryn Davies (sax, accordion) and Joanne Owen (bass).

Tonight co-founder of Siouxsie and the Banshees Steven Severin will present his live soundtrack performance to Jean Cocteau’s 1930 movie classic Le Sang d'un Poete (55 mins) plus a live score for the new short film Maloja (6 mins) by Mademoiselle L. A key member of the infamous "Bromley contingent" which helped to redefine fashion and culture in Seventies England, Steven Severin formed Siouxsie and the Banshees in 1976 together with Siouxsie Sioux. Steven was featured on all 16 albums and 30 singles as co-lyricist and songwriter during their two decades long career. During their reign, Siouxsie and the Banshees established themselves as one of the foremost alternative artists and the only survivors of the London punk scene to evolve, innovate and succeed until their mid 90s break up. Since the split of the Banshees Steven Severin has been busy working on various solo projects and collaborations as well as continuing to work as a producer and writing articles for The Guardian and The Independent.

Brighton-based composer.musician Nick Hudson brings his band The Academy of Sun (featuring members of TYSARC and Plurals) to the capital to perform 'Dead Souls' - an extended composition featuring elements of prog, jazz, doom, folk, drone and psyche-rock. Invoking the use of the term 'Dead Souls' in the works of Crowley, Joy Division and Gogol, this piece was written in tandem with Nick's new record 'My Antique Son' which will be released on Alter Clef Records this autumn.

Katy’s music is inspired by themes, stories and characters from 1940s Britain, France and Poland. Boasting a wide variety of performances from The Royal Opera House to Glastonbury music festival together with regular appearances on BBC radio, this eccentric and eclectic performer delivers her self -penned folk songs, with verve and humour.

After the success of his solo appearance last November in London Hugo Race (ex Bad Seeds, Dirtmusic) returns in town for another exclusive UK date, this time with a full set with his band The True Spirit.

Melbourne-born multi-instrumentalist, performer and songwriter Hugo Race is an eclectic and prolific artist who has worked and lives in US, UK, France, Germany and Italy since 1988. He was a founding member of Nick Cave's Bad Seeds (1983) with whom he also worked in the final stages of the Birthday Party. He appears on five CDs of the Bad Seeds catalogue. Through the 90's he released a series of nine records under his own name with the Berlin-based musical collective The True Spirit for the Normal and Glitterhouse label, culminating in 'The Long Time Ago' double Cd retrospective released in 2001. In 1999 Hugo set up his own production base Helidex. Recording in different situations and locations from Brussels to Bologna, The True Spirit have followed a personal musical vision in a series of mutating line-ups that fuse the boundaries between blues and electronica, described by London Sounds as 'night music for the soul' and by Melody Maker as 'industrial-trance-blues'.

Hugo released his solo album ‘In Between Hemispheres’ at the end of 2009 on Gustaff Records, and received outstanding reviews from the press.

What’s so arresting about Between Hemispheres is its physicality. The ambience reminds of Eno and Harold Budd but elements of distortion suggest a man not afraid to get his shoes dirty. There’s a soiuled intensity about this album – both sweeping beauty and true grit.

Anni Hogan is a British musician, composer and Club DJ, originally known for her association with British Electro artist-cum-torch singer Marc Almond.
Hogan now collaborates with a diverse variety of artists including Rachel McFarlane and Cagedbaby.

Cold Spring re-released Hogan's 1987 EP Kickabye in January 2009. The EP was originally on Cabaret Voltaire's (now defunkt) Doublevision label. Kickabye EP included Marc Almond and Nick Cave guest vocals and Budgie (Siouxsie and The Banshees) on drums and harmonica. Foetus produced the original EP. The re-release included the unreleased follow up EP produced by Barry Adamson and early collaborations with Yello and Simon Fisher Turner (as Deux Filles) It also included 4 brand new solo piano recordings of Almond/Hogan songs.

Tonight Anni is going to present fresh material from her latest album 'Mountain' (Cold Spring).

A show about breaking the ties that bind

Bare/not Projects are first-time curators from Central St Martins. Our debut show - Caged Bird Sings at The Crypt Gallery - is a group project with 21 artists, sculptors, film-makers and photographers who have an open brief to deconstruct and challenge ideas of restriction.

These artworks confront the illusion that we alone control our lives; an antidote to the media’s influence on our perceived autonomy; where liberated individuals are praised whilst stereotypes, moral panics, religious beliefs, political ideologies and sexist or racist perceptions are perpetuated.

With themes ranging from immigration and cultural identity to sex trafficking and claustrophobia we want to explore the wider issues surrounding restriction.

- Is security, which undermines liberty in the name of protection, desirable?

- Is what we feel as an act of freedom lived as an act of violence by someone else?

- Are these binds inevitable or self-imposed by our collective or personal conscience?

- Can there be a world with ‘no conformities, no clichés, myths or anything which is given or dictated; where it is possible to eschew conflict because everyone is allowed to be different’ as defined by anthropologist Roland Barthes?

- Is freedom really the ultimate goal?

We’ve joined forces with charities Stop the Traffik and the Anti-Slavery Organisation, and will be holding a symposium in the Crypt on 17 April to investigate our theme and talk about the legacy of restriction and censorship in art history. The symbolism of water has a universal undertone of purity and fertility. Symbolically, it is often viewed as the source of life itself as we see evidence in countless creation myths in which life emerges from primordial waters. 11 artists photographers and four music acts celebrate the relationship between the element and the surroundings, showing with their images and sound their personal vision of water, simply on a boat, on the Thames.

A rare London appearance for Roger O'Donnell who has created a new composition exclusively for Ship of Fools Club entitled 'Winter, Autumn, Spring'. Last year she took the stage of the Queen Elizabeth Hall with Black Box Recorder and supported Hugo Race (ex Bad Seeds) in his London appearance.
Madam will play a full line up set including recent addition John Mercedo from Queen of Swords, whose soundscapes have become integral part of the cutting edge and nocturnal sound of the band.

iNiT plays sultry dancefloor sounds with an electro edge. Cabaret, electronica, rock and Middle Eastern influences fuse into a smokey eyed kaleidoscope. Songs of burlesque, urban angst and lurv are performed with outright audacity, plenty of tongue in cheek but almost always - a grain of truth. Their work entails both the creation of sound and a visual exploration of it. The latter is particularly evident in their colourful live performances. Roshi
Born in Wales to Iranian parents, Roshi Nasehi is a singer -writer who presents her own evocative songs alongside sometimes quite radical interpretations of some of the Iranian songs she was brought up listening to. Graan formed spontaneously following a successful appearance under the Platform Five (Funf) at the Avantgarde festival in Schiphorst, Germany, in July 2008.

SonVer formed in November 2003, when Joanna Quail [cello] and Ben McLees [guitar] wrote and recorded 'Until The Stones Melt', a 9-minute track which would form the template for SonVer's cinematic. post-rock soundscapes. During the summer of 2007. SonVer expanded to a 4-piece, with the addition of guitarist/bassist Ruban Byrne and drummer Alistair Richardson. In November 2008, SonVer release their second album 'Luz del Abyss', supported by a live show in Leige [Belgium] and a third appearance at The Union Chapel in London.

***Note: This set does not include the full line up of SonVer. Joanna Quail will be opening presenting some new 'solo' material. She then will be joined by Ben McLees and special guest Will Connor (Vultures) for the rest of the performance.

Melbourne-born multi-instrumentalist, performer and songwriter Hugo Race is an eclectic and prolific artist who has worked and lives in US, UK, France, Germany and Italy since 1988. He was a founding member of Nick Cave’s Bad Seeds (1983) with whom he also worked in the final stages of the Birthday Party. He appears on five CDs of the Bad Seeds catalogue. Through the 90’s he released a series of nine records under his own name with the Berlin-based musical collective The True Spirit for the Normal and Glitterhouse label, culminating in ‘The Long Time Ago’ double Cd retrospective released in 2001. In 1999 Hugo set up his own production base Helidex. Recording in different situations and locations from Brussels to Bologna, The True Spirit have followed a personal musical vision in a series of mutating line-ups that fuse the boundaries between blues and electronica, described by London Sounds as ‘night music for the soul’ and by Melody Maker as ‘industrial-trance-blues’. This is an exclusive solo London gig for Hugo Race and the last date of an extensive European and Australian tour. He is going to present fresh material from his acclaimed album ‘Between Hemispheres’.

Lilies On Mars is a London based female duo originally from Italy. They seems to already have caught the attention of several renowned people. So they met David Lynch in 2007 and composed a special tribute show following his conference in Palermo. Rose McDowall
Rose McDowall needs little introduction.
Scottish musician, and former member of pop-punk duo Strawberry Switchblade, she has collaborated over the years with backing and main vocals for a number of high profile acts such as: Coil, Current 93, Death in June, Felt, Alex Ferguson, Nurse with Wound and Psychic TV. She formed the band Sorrow in 1993, releasing two albums and one EP, and touring the U.S and Europe extensively. Rose is best known as a vocalist, but also plays guitar, keyboards, melodica and drums.
This is a rare chance to see Rose and her band perform in London.

Gina Birch

Gina Birch is a founding member of post-punk legend The Raincoats. 'Embraced by the dying punk movement, adopted by the fledgling Riot Grrrl scene and resurrected by Kurt Cobain at the height of his powers, the Raincoats were the proto-feminist girl group with great timing.' - Betty Clarke, The Guardian She then formed The Hangovers, and was asked to do the music for The Handsome Foundation's show, The Fear Show. She composed a few tracks that then became the basis for the album Slow Dirty Tears, which was released on Kill Rock Stars in the US and on her own label in the UK. In 2002 and 2007 she performed live at Ladyfest and continues to play solo and recently again with The Raicoats in UK and Europe. Gina is also an artist and filmaker who directed videoclips for New Order, Beth Orton, The Libertines, The Pogues just to mention a few. At present she is working on the documentary 'The Raincoats, Fairytale: A Work in Progress. The first part of the film was presented with great success a NFT1earlier this year. 'When I listen to The Raincoats I feel as if I'm a stowaway in an attic, violating and in the dark. Rather than listening to them I feel like I'm listening in on them. We're together in the same old house and I have to be completely still or they will hear me spying from above and, if I get caught - everything will be ruined because it's their thing.' Christy & Emily

The Brooklyn based duo made up of Christy Edwards and Emily Manzo creates beautiful, emotive, and rather weird folksongs for the digital age. While Emily is a conservatory-trained classical pianist who studied at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio, the self-taught guitar player Christy moved from California to New York to join miscellaneous indie pop and punk groups (Lil' Fighters, The Totallys, Brue Force). She then met her keyboard-playing affiliate in Brooklyn/NY, where Emily is a very sought-after interpreter of contemporary composers (especially John Cage's piano music). Together they're able to develop lush vocal harmonies which could make stones melt.

Helen McCookerybook

Helen was the bass guitar player and lead singer with Brighton-based punk rock band The Chefs during the late 1970s and early 1980s. She later formed Helen And The Horns before continuing her career as a solo artist, writer and lecturer. She released 'Suburban Pastoral' on Rough Trade Records in November 2006, followed by 'Poetry and Rhyme' on Barbaraville in October 2008. On 19th June she will be releasing another album, 'Hamilton Square' in conjunction with Martin Stephenson, lead singer with the Daintees. Her first book (as Helen Reddington) The Lost Women of Rock Music: Female Musicians of the Punk Era was published in July 2007. The book features interviews with the Slits, Gina Birch, The Mo-dettes, Enid Williams (Girlschool), Dolly Mixture, Gaye Black (Adverts), Vi Subversa (Poison Girls), Rhoda Dakar, Lucy O'Brien, Attila the Stockbroker, Caroline Coon, Geoff Travis and the late John Peel.

Alana Sveta

Alana Sveta was born in New Mexico, and has been at this singing thing since early childhood. Recording since age 12, she has had several years of jazz training behind her having been taught by Bay Area Jazz Great Gail Dobson, mother of New York singer Sasha Dobson, and wife of the late and legendary jazz pianist Smith Dobson. Alana’s high school band, Gogonasty played a few shows around San Jose, CA in 2003 and 2004. This is the first event of Ship of Fools Club, a collaboration between Tursa and Kaparte Promotions.

Music on a boat in a central London location, only one minute from Temple tube station and right behind Somerset House.

The Ship Of Fools debut is Tony Wakeford assisted by Renee Rosen of Sol Invictus and Guy Harries and M from Orchestra Noir. Join them as they take a stumble through Mr Happy's back catalog. Expect also some new songs from the forthcoming Sol Invictus album out on Prophecy later this year and maybe a guest or two as a contrast to that silky voice and gay banter.

Support will come from harpist and songwriter Lunamoth whose cover version of Bjork's "Army Of Me" was chosen by Bjork herself to be featured on a charity compilation of covers and re-mixes of that particular song, with all proceeds going to UNICEF ("Army Of Me" the album is available through One Little Indian records).Lunamoth also plays for Eva Eden, Florence and The Machine and Paul Mosley.
